A perfect gift for fishermen
This is a high quality set of pliers/multitool which would make a perfect gift. The box it comes in is attractive and everything is neatly packaged.These pliers are stainless steel so it’ll work well in freshwater or saltwater. There are cutouts in the handles to keep overall weight down, but there is still a heftiness due to it being large. Nothing on this feels flimsy. The folding arms/tools/lock won’t accidentally open up on their own, but they do swing out smoothly and easily when you want them to. Inside the box is a holster to attach to your belt or a lanyard to attach this to something else.The pliers themselves are full size. I would say they are slightly larger in the handle width compared to other fishing pliers so it may not be as great a fit for people with smaller hands. I will also say that the handle ergonomics are not the best especially when compared to standalone pliers. This is all due to the unique folding design so you just have to be aware of the tradeoffs between standalone and a multifunction. Also, since these are full size, I wouldn’t consider the folding to make them “compact”; it just becomes shorter/wider vs long thinner so it’s really down to your preference if this works better for you.For me though, I think the multitools are the main feature of these pliers. You get the standard fishing plier tools like split ring and line cutter. Then you also get tools from your standard multitools such as knife, flathead, bottle opener, and file. The tools themselves seem pretty standard compared to standalone multitools under $20 and should get the job done. You also get a “bird’s nest” picking tool. Luckily, I’ve never made a bird’s nest so bad that it needed a tool, but I can see other instances where the pick would be useful. I think the only tool that would have been nice to include is a hook eye pick. You could use the bird’s nest tool for larger saltwater hooks, but it is too thick for most freshwater hooks. If it tapered a little more at the tip, it would have been perfect for this purpose. I think this is a great mix of tools though.The pricing may seem a little high ($37 at time of ordering), but keep in mind that this is a high quality set that combines fishing pliers and a multitool (both which could be anywhere from $10 and up on their own). Also, my brief search on Amazon did not reveal any fishing multitools similar to this.When looked at as a whole, these pliers save so much space because it combines fishing pliers and a mutitool. While it may not have all the tools in a traditional multitool or be as ergonomic as traditional fishing pliers, it successfully combines both into one functional set. This is a fishing multitool and as such, it’s not expected to excel at everything, but what it does have, it does it good enough to be very useful. As possibly the first of its kind of tool, it is definitely a recommended buy from me.
